For Provisions, Howe Gelb's first LP under the Giant Sand umbrella since 2004's Is All Over The Map, a few ground rules were apparently set. First, the guest stars had to be slammin', and indeed they are. Neko Case, M. Ward, Isobel Campbell, and Henriette Sennenvaldt of Under Byen all lend a hand on the new set. The second condition? Save Gelb, all the other Giant Sand players had to be Danish.
For Carried To Dust, Calexico co-founders Joey Burns and John Convertino called on a rotating cast of musicians and friends to help them create what is arguably their most varied and strongest work to date. The band lineup that solidified around Feast of Wire is back again, along with a number of guests, including Sam Beam, Douglas McCombs, and Pieta Brown.
Everyone's got their demons and such, keeping them down in their pit can be too much over a flurry of hits in the gut. Here's hopin'. Singin' "Back it on up and start again". I get the sense I may be singin' that for a long while.
