Winner of Special Jury prize, Cannes Film Festival (1973), this French animation classic by Ren Laloux is set on another world where humans are small and kept as pets by large blue-skinned creatures. The hero is one such pet, who gets a hold of his master's learning machine and eventually leads a rebellion. The film's images, with eco-hippy undertones, are phantasmagorical. As the hero wanders across the planet's landscape, there are many creatures and plants that interact with strange ecologies, sometimes contributing directly to the narrative and sometimes just passing as an incidental piece of epic imagination
