This is the story of a man who has yet to realise what destiny holds in store for him... Far in the future, humans have lived underground restlessly for hundreds of years, suffering from frequent earthquakes and land shortage. In of such underground village, there are two young men. One, Simon, is shy and na ve, the other, Kamina, is brash and believes in the existence of a "surface" world above their heads. The destiny of the two starts changing drastically when the ceiling falls. A gigantic "Gunmen" mecha crashes through in battle with a beautiful girl, Yoko, with a superconductive rifle come from the surface. Kamina, Simon and Yoko get on the mecha "Lagann" that Simon digs out from the ground, and jump out to the surface! However, the world above is not such a dreamland as Kamina imagined, falling under the reign of the Spiral King and his army of Gunmen piloting Beastmen. Kamina and Simon, along with their comrades must meet the challenge to change this desperate world to one with hope for the future!
