Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts - Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) - as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars.

Being one of the first Digital Sound releases in Australia, this movie marks a turning point in cinema history for digital sound and video. Almost 20 years on, it is showing it's age, and I cant help but think the movie would have benefited from a digital restoration, as the bluray transfer is not the best I have seen. Having said that, the movie retains all the magic that we remember from our childhoods, and the DTS HD-MA 7.1 audio really conveys the thunderous footsteps of the T-Rex as it approaches the helpless characters stranded in their vehicles and leaves a smile on your face as the music builds to a crescendo of the Jurassic park theme whilst the helicopter sails over the towering peaks of Isla Nubla in the opening scenes of the movie, making this an invaluable addition to the movie collection for anyone who still finds their imagination running wild at the mention of dinosaurs.
