Based on the Highland novels by Compton MackenzieMonarch of The Glen follows the loves, conflicts and schemes of the MacDonald family, their neighbours and employees in one of the most popular dramas ever screened on British television. As Archie begins to look for a life beyond Glenbogle, along comes Paul, a half-brother the Laird never knew existed. He has to win Archie round, but by the time he and Lexie leave for New Zealand, Archie is confident enough to pass on the title. At first, Paul seems to think that being a Laird is purely about managing the estate. However, as Golly explains his heritage and the traditions of his new-found Highland background, Paul comes to understand that Glenbogle is worth fighting for - especially when Donald MacDonald, Hector's long-lost brother, appears after a forty year absence. Though settled at Glenbogle, Paul's romances with farmer Isobel Anderson, neighbour Lucy Ford and brewery chairwoman Amanda MacLeish, all falter. Will he ever find his perfect partner? Meanwhile, there is no shortage of drama at Glenbogle. An unhappy Lexie returns from New Zealand; Golly is reunited with his daughter Jess; 'girl-charmer' Ewan becomes Chef and illegal DJ, and Molly finds the past catching up with her. For all at Glenbogle, however, a catastrophe is approaching. The estate's financial standing becomes increasingly perilous and as creditors and hostile buyers close in, the unthinkable seems inevitable: is this the end of life at Glenbogle for the MacDonald family?
