In 1975, John Hurt starred as Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant. In 2009 Hurt revisits the role, depicting the latter years of Crisp's life, those spent in New York City. On arrival in New York Crisp meets Phillip Steele (Denis O'Hare), the publisher of the Village Voice, who offers Crisp a job as the paper's new film critic. Crisp earns a new fan base but he falls from public grace after declaring AIDS to be "a fad, nothing more".Age begins to take its toll on Crisp but returning to the stage in collaboration with performance artist Penny Arcade (Cynthia Nixon - Sex in the City) he again finds favour in the public eye. An Englishman in New York received its world premiere at the 2009 Berlin Internal Film Festival; where Hurt was awarded a 'Special Teddy' for his outstanding performance as the inimitable Crisp. Taking its title from the song by Sting, An Englishman in New York is an outstanding achievement by all involved and fitting tribute to one of the most illuminating voices of the twentieth century.
