Derek Jarman's classic biopic of the great Renaissance painter, Michelangelo Caravaggio (1571-1610). Told in flashback as the artist lies dying in poverty, the film brilliantly recreates the look and colour of Caravaggio's original paintings while exploring the homoerotic subtext of his work - and speculating on the artist's relationship with his models, especially Ranuccio (Sean Bean), who becomes the centre of a vicious love triangle involving his wife (Tilda Swinton) as well as the artist. Arguably the most accessible of Jarman's films, it remains a testament to his distinctive visual style.
