Kirstie Alley (Look Who's Talking, Cheers) delivers a powerful performance as Sally Goodman, the overly protective mother of her brain-damaged son, David.Sally's unique ability to meet David's every need satisfies her own need to feel special. Devoting all her time and attention to David, however, drives Sally's husband and daughter away. A special school would give David more independence, but when a social worker (Phylicia Rashad, "The Cosby Show") pushes for one, Sally can't bring herself to let her son go.It's not until a new man in Sally's life (Sam Waterston, "I'll Fly Away"), whom she meets through her sister (Stockard Channing, "Six Degrees of Separation"), proves that David is capable of doing things for himself, when he teaches the boy to operate a VCR. Faced with this fact, Sally struggles with the realisation that it was she who needed the attention as much as David did. Now she has a chance to change all that, but does she have the courage?
