Based on the Dickens novel and winner of two Oscars, Great Expectations tells the story of Pip (John Mills), a blacksmith's apprentice who inherits a handsome property. He believes that his unexpected good fortune has originated from Miss Havisham (Martita Hunt), an eccentric old lady, with whom he was acquainted, playing with her adopted daughter Estella, as a child. However, Pip's Great Expectations have emanated from another quarter. When he was a boy, he helped out an escaped convict Magwitch (Finlay Currie), who in gratitude gave Pip much of his fortune. Pip knows nothing of this until the convict returns, on penalty of death, to see if he is happy in his new life. Pip then has to help Magwitch leave the country, an act that leads him back to Estella, Miss Havisham's cold adopted daughter, whom who he has always loved. The first Dickens novel that Lean adapted for the screen, it was voted the fifth greatest British fim of the twentieth century by the British Film Institute.
