Hunger explores the real life events surrounding the 1981 IRA hunger strike at Northern Ireland's Maze Prison. Behind the walls of Maze, a group of convicted IRA volunteers are subjected to frequent violence by their guards. When they refuse to wear standard prison-issue uniforms as a protest against Britain's refusal to recognize them as political prisoners, they fail to get results. One IRA member, Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender), decides to take a different tack and begins a hunger strike, refusing to eat until Irish officials are willing to acknowledge the IRA as a legitimate political organization.
