World War II: during the Nazi occupation of France, the nation's movie studios continued to make films. Some filmmakers and technicians, such as Jean Devaivre (Jacques Gamblin - winner of a Silver Bear at 2002 Berlin International Film Festival), an assistant director, simply went along with what their new political leaders asked, hoping to keep themselves and their families out of trouble; while others, such as screenwriter Jean Aurenche (Denis Podalydes), tried to convey an anti-German message through their work. Bertrand Tavernier's feature film is a fact-based period drama which examines the lives of two men, Devaivre and Aurenche, working for a movie company financed by the Germans (Continental Films) during 1942 and 1943.
