Chris Cross (Edward G Robinson) doesn't strike the viewer as a tough guy at all. Matter of fact, he's a 25 year old cashier who paints in his spare time, and the last thing he expects is to wind up scamming his boss. But then he sees Kitty March (Joan Bennett) being attacked on the street one night. He goes against character, and decides he'll be her knight in shining armour. That's what he thinks anyway. Kitty and her partner Johnny Prince (Dan Duryea) quickly hatch plans to take Chris for all he's got. The plans go well as long as Chris is their puppet. In his home, Cross lives a life of torment with his harridan wife, painting when he gets the chance. He's ripe for the picking by a couple of scam artists with a beautiful dame doing the leading. Surprises are in store of course. This is director Fritz Lang at his peak - bringing venality and greed to the fore, and making the best of a superb cast. Its to their credit that this film so offended censors in 1946 that it was given a "b" rating in some states, and banned outright in others including New York! Essential noir.
