The Stranger begins in postwar Germany where a meeting of the War Crimes commission is being held. Those present decide that a heinous Nazi war criminal, Shayne should be released from prison in the hopes that he will lead the commission to his superior, the infamous Franz Kindler (Welles), one of the architects of the genocide against the Jews. Robinson is assigned to follow Shayne, and the chase begins.Shayne, a most unattractive, nervous little man winds his way through Europe, Latin America and finally arrives in the small college town of Harper, Connecticut, where Welles is living under the name of Charles Rankin. Realising he is being followed Shayne knocks out Robinson and proceeds to the address of Welles which he discovered from the "phone book, only to find Welles' fiancee, the daughter of a prominent judge in the town, preparing for their marriage later that day. Shayne leaves to meet Welles on the path.Welles is enraged to learn that Shayne has traced him to Harper. He geans what little information he can from Shayne before straggling him and leaving his body to bury later that day, after his wedding ceremony.
