Described as "The Big Chill with a PhD", Denys Arcand's The Decline of the American Empire is an ingeniously talkative tale laden with sexual innuendo and double entendres, all willingly expressed by intellectuals and the women they sleep with. Undeniably warm and incontrovertibly intelligent, the characters and their various exploits are conveyed in competitive speech, sometimes thinly veiled in historical euphemism, sometimes blatantly explicit. This is a film not simply about sex, but more how we talk about it, and my how these people talk about it! Nominated for best foreign film at the 1987 Academy Awards, The Decline of the American Empire is an exemplary representation of the filmic talents possessed by one of Canada's finest from the new generation of directors.

Witty, satirical and blackly humorous, Jesus Of Montreal depicts a contemporary interpretation of the traditional passion play, demeaning irrelevant and narrow-minded religious conventions in the process. Director Denys Arcand not only handles that arduous task gallantly, but also manages to work in brief, subtle yet highly effective jabs at the vanity and self-obsessiveness of stalwarts of the entertainment and theatre industry. The result is a beautifully shot and highly relevant piece of religious satire. Nominated for an Oscar and a slew of other prestigious awards, Jesus Of Montreal is a beautifully wry social commentary and elegant depiction of what life may be like if Jesus walked among us in these highly troubled and sinful times.

Based on Brad Fraser's play "Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love", Denys Arcand's Love and Human Remains is a flawlessly executed examination of the risky nature of love and sex in the 90s. A perfect balance of reality and metaphor, Love and Human Remains follows the complex love lives of three closely linked individuals and all the people who, willingly or otherwise, become entwined in their emotional game.
