Beautiful housewife Ann (Tierney) lives in upper-middle-class opulence with her husband, a famed psychiatrist. But what her husband doesn't know is that Ann harbours a shameful secret: she is an habitual shoplifter. After being caught red-handed while stealing a brooch at an upper-class department store, Ann falls under the spell of an immoral quack (Jose Ferrer), who promises to cure her of her kleptomania. What Ann doesn't realise is that her would-be saviour wishes to exploit Ann at her most vulnerable, while she is hypnotised, and implicate her in the murder of his ex-mistress. Combining Preminger's dark vision with a stunning aesthetic, powerful performances and a unique taste for the macabre, Whirlpool is a triumph of the film noir style.
