The inspiration for City of Angels and the film which earned Wim Wenders the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival, Wings of Desire is a life-affirming hymn to a divided Berlin. Bruno Ganz stars as Damiel, a lonely, trenchcoated angel who watches over the city, silently comforting its citizens in their hour of need. But when he is captivated by a beautiful French trapeze artist, Damiel decides to trade his gentle, angelic life for the torturous emotions of the secular world. With his divine position in jeopardy, he must choose to either give up love, or lose his eternal wings forever.

One can just sit back and soak it up in sweeping takes and wondrous mood, including his use of fantastic music (including Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds). For me, it's the main character's innocence and will to really live ALL of what life's about that is the driving force, along with the cameos, in particular Peter Falk's self-playing character! Ah, what a gem! Few other films have that 'je ne sais quoi' otherness about them... except his mentors Kurasowa, Truffaut, Tarkovski, and perhaps a couple of others, perhaps including Kieslowski... another master film-maker! |
