Director Douglas Sirk's lush, technicolour melodrama masterpiece is an absorbing, flamboyant and overheated tale of American social decay in 1950s as the rich and famous are paralysed by greed, alcoholism and sexual frustration.
The Hadleys, a mega-rich Texas oil family, begin to self-destruct when the booze-soaked Playboy son (Robert Stack) suddenly courts and marries his father's respectable good-girl executive secretary (Lauren Bacall). Rock Hudson plays the responsible, stable family friend and boyhood playmate making furtive advances on Bacall while fending off the debauched, lustful Hadley daughter (Dorothy Malone). As this carnal quartet begins to implode, Stack's self-pitying impotency fires him with murderous jealousy.
Sirk's vivid, searing melodrama was rightly a huge critical hit, with Malone winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Robert Stack just missing out on a deserving Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
