RW Fassbinder's film about a group of actors making a film in Italy is his funniest and most autobiographical yet! Conceived while the director was shooting Whity in Spain, Beware of a Holy Whore details the professional, personal and sexual goings-on of a group of thwarted artists and technicians who spend their time arguing, having sex and flexing their mammoth egos, while waiting for production to begin. But the film is plagued with problems: a great deal of money was lost when one of its producers pulled out and still many of its resources have yet to arrive from Germany, including the director! When he eventually does show up, his ego appears to be the biggest all, and he laments the fact that his actors do not understand his genius. With an extended ensemble cast that includes Fassbinder himself, his contemporary, director Margarethe von Trotta, Lou Castel, Eddie Constantine and Hanna Schygulla, Beware of a Holy Whore ranks one of the best films about film-making.
The MERCHANT OF FOUR SEASONS (RW Fassbinder) $18.99 (AUD) Hans is a born loser. After returning from a year in the Foreign Legion, his aspirations of becoming an engineer cave in to his reality as a humble street fruit peddler, a career choice which upsets both his domineering wife and his middle-class family. Due to his family's lack of respect and blatant criticism of his occupation, Hans is led down the path of alcohol and violence, two vices which threaten to destroy his life as he knows it. | FASSBINDER ON SOCIETY (3 DVD Set) $18.99 (AUD) RW Fassbinder's keen critique of German society is none more obvious than in this three-film boxset combining Katzelmacher, Chinese Roulette and Satan's Brew, films in which he rages against societal pressures to do with xenophobia, the institution of marriage, patriarchy and the fetishisation of consumerism. Fassbinder's revolutionary spirit comes to the fore in these rare and insightful films. | $18.99 (AUD) Features three films: THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT, FOX AND HIS FRIENDS, N A YEAR WITH 13 MOONS. | Rw Fassbinder - The Gangster Films $18.99 (AUD) This stunning three-disc boxset finally unites the trio of French New Wave-inspired film noirs in a single release. Each reworking the hard-boiled gangster genre, Fassbinder's films are some of the most interesting and intriguing of the New German Cinema movement. |
