Ingmar Bergman's acclaimed aesthetic style and knack for subtle storytelling are beautifully achieved in Brink of Life, which garnered a Best Director award for Bergman and a shared Best Actress award for its three lead actresses at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival. Three expectant mothers meet in a maternity ward, each at different stages of pregnancy. As they suffer through several issues faced during pregnancy - miscarriages, the difficulty of labour, the stress of an unwanted child - they are given new perspectives on life and relationships, and ultimately find comfort in one another. Each character is given equal screen time, creating a perfectly balanced examination of the vast range of problems which can befall expectant mothers. This subject matter - which also offers a harsh perception of the lack of emotion in modern medicine - is perfectly complemented by Bergman's naturalistic directorial style, and it is this style, together with the powerful performances of his female leads, which makes Brink of Life a compelling example of Bergman's artistic excellence.

BEWARE OF A HOLY WHORE

$18.99 (AUD)

RW Fassbinder's film about a group of actors making a film in Italy is his funniest and most autobiographical yet! Conceived while the director was shooting Whity in Spain, Beware of a Holy Whore details the professional, personal and sexual goings-on of a group of thwarted artists and technicians who spend their time arguing, having sex and flexing their mammoth egos, while waiting for production to begin.

The film opens in a Dickensian orphanage in Russia, a fascinating miniature world presided over by a hierarchy of orphans. The daily routine is broken when "Madam" arrives to introduce a loving Italian couple hoping to adopt a child.
