The Dutch winner of the 1997 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film is an epic Oedipal struggle. Set in Holland in the 20s, this lush period drama opens with a heated argument between two men before the elder is knifed by the younger man, later revealed as his son. The father, Dreverhaven (Jan Decleir) was a fearless Scrooge-like moneylender, while his son, Katadreuffe (Fedja van Huet), was the offspring of a single night's passion with his housekeeper - she later leaves with the boy to raise him alone. When she dies, father and son have a fascinating love-hate battle as the younger rises to become a successful lawyer.
