Since exploring on to the scene as a winner at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu's Amores Perros has gone on to achieve universal acclaim and admiration from critics, cinemagoers and directors alike. The film undoubtedly heralds the arrival of a major new talent in world cinema.Beginning with a kinetic, bone-crushing car accident, Amores Perros imaginatively interweaves the stories of its three victims: Octavio (Gael Garcia Bernal) a young man who has fallen in love with his violent brother's wife, Valeria (Goya Toldeo), a beautiful Mexican model for whom physical appearances are everything, and El Chivo (Emilio Echevarria), a former political assasin now exiled from his family. The result is a moving, visceral eulogy to life, loss and dog fighting on Mexico's mean streets. Winner of 2002 BAFTA - Best Foreign Film!

Brilliant Screenwriter's Debut

Ian David on 21.05.2013

The director, Alejandro Innaritu, accepted many accolades for this film, but they belong equally with the screenwriter, Guillermo Arriaga. The concept, structure and characters are masterfully rendered in a screenplay that is astounding for its originality and finesse. Arriaga influenced a generation of writers with this film and those that followed from his pen. He is a master and Innaritu got very lucky when he was handed Arriaga's work.
