Following his groundbreaking directorial debut, the infamous rape/revenge shocker The Last House On The Left (1972), and the success of his second feature, the ferocious genre classic The Hills Have Eyes (1977), director Wes Craven had already achieved cult status with films that encapsulated the fury and desperation of the times. Here, Craven tells the story of a woman's fight against a religious cult which will not stop at murder. Martha (Maren Jensen) lives alone near a conservative, repressive religious cult led by Isaiah (Ernest Borgnine), her husband having been murdered under mysterious circumstances after he left the cult. Martha and her two visiting friends Vicky (Susan Buckner) and Lana (Sharon Stone) are soon pressured to join the cult and begin having nightmares and accidents before a spate of murders sees the women become targets. Craven gets great performances from his cast, while the film features outstanding cinematography by Robert Jessup and a beautiful score composed by James Horner.
