Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (and brother of Dennis Hopper) brings his horror prowess to this tasty shocker that consolidated his place as one of the great horror auteurs. Neither as gory as his epic debut (also released by Umbrella this month) nor as flat-out insane as its follow-up Eaten Alive, this psycho-shocker packs plenty of scares. The story follows two amorous young couples as they enter the sleazoid world of a sinister travelling night carnival before a combination of curiosity and stupidity puts them at the mercy of the freakish creature living behind the scenes. Hooper exploits the surreal potential of the story's setting to create some nightmarish moments, while the moment the creature is revealed is a classic of the 'stalk-and-slash' genre.
