The top espionage agents of Russia, Red China, Israel, Great Britain and the U.S. will do anything - repeat-anything - to catch the Salzburg Connection. American lawyer William Mathison (Barry Newman) is vacationing in Switzerland when he is asked by an American publishing firm to go to Salzburg Austria to contact a photographer who has written a book about Austrian lakes. Mathison immediately realises that something is amiss when he reaches the photographer's small shop and finds him missing his wife Anna (Anna Karina) frantic. It soon becomes apparent that the photographer has been murdered having found a chest at the bottom of a lake containing a list of Nazi collaborators from WWII. With the list now in their possession Mathison and Anna find themselves being hunted both by those whose names appear on the list and by members of the international intelligence community wishing to use the list as a another bargaining chip in The Great Game of international espionage.
