Nabucco is set in biblical times and takes place in both Babylon and Jerusalem. To run away from the invading Assirians, led by Nabucodonosor, the Hebrews of Jerusalem take refuge in the Solomon Temple where the supreme Priest Zachary encourages them to pray for salvation. He feels positive that they will win salvation but he keeps Fenena, Nabucco's daughter, prisoner to use as hostage if necessary. This major production of Nabucco, with more than 130 artistes on stage is led by the opera singer Renato Bruson, recently the guest star in La Scala for "Macbeth" for the opening of the 1998 season. "Va' Pensiero" is sung in chorus in the third act and is one of the most widely recognised tunes in operatic music.
