Girl in a Mirror is a riveting portrait of the extraordinary Carol Jerrems, a photographer of phenomenal talent whose photographs intimately chronicle Australian counter-culture during the 1970s, a decade defined by its challenges to convention, morality and social order. Adventurous and forthright in her sexuality Jerrems most recognizable work Vale St, an iconic image of '70s youth culture, rages with the raw menace and sexual ambiguity of the time. Her unique style combined with a dark irreverence demanded risks, both physical and emotional, which often bordered on the self-destructive. Described as the James Dean of Australian photography, Jerrems' work possesses a haunting quality heightened by the tragedy of her early death at the age of just 30 when she fell victim to a mysterious blood disorder. With an extraordinary determination Carol confronted death with her camera, photographing her decimated body during months of invasive and painful medical procedures until too weak to continue. With breathtaking clarity Girl in a Mirror features 73 of Jerrems' original prints, many having never been seen before plus 166 new prints created exclusively for the film alongside interviews with former lovers and friends including filmmakers Paul Cox and Esben Storm, Daddy Cool member Ross Hannaford and dialogue derived direct from Jerrems own personal diaries to create a moving and insightful testament to the strength, sensitivity, humour and artistry of an Australian icon. *** ". this amazing documentary, one that conjures the world of Carol Jerrems with great imagination and skill, not only bringing Carol's artistry to Australia's attention, but also takes documentary craft somewhere fresh and exciting."
