In September 2001, three young friends set off from Tipton in the English Midlands for a wedding in Pakistan. After travelling through Pakistan, the boys impulsively jumped on a bus and crossed the border into Afghanistan. They were, however, unaware that the US had just begun their invasion of Afghanistan in retaliation for terrorist attacks on The World Trade Centre.
Swept up in a terrifying ordeal they were captured, handed over to US soldiers and, through a series of events beyond their control, mistaken as terrorists and held for two years in the American military prison at Guantanamo Bay.
Based on real events, acclaimed directors Michael Winterbottom (Welcome to Sarajevo, Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story) and Mat Whitecross have recreated the experiences of the three boys now known as the Tipton Three. The Road to Guantanamo takes us on the Tipton Three's epic journey as, step by step, they go from the safety of their small-town existence to the heart of the war on terror'.
Winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, The Road to Guantanamo is a gripping, terrifying and fascinating look at how far the US will go in the name of security.
