SALESMAN follows four door-to-door Bible salesmen as they walk the line between hype and despair. Paul "The Badger" Brennan, charles "The Gipper" McDewitt, James "The Rabbit" Baker, and Raymond "The Bull" Martos, are so nicknamed for their particular selling styles - on their rounds. First making calls in and around Boston, where the company is based, then in Chicago at a sales conference, and finally in the promising new "territory" of Miami and vicinity.Their mission is simple: to convince people to buy what one of them calls "still the best seller in the world." Acclaimed directors Albert and David Maysles' (Grey Gardens, Gimme Shelter) 1969 documentary Salesman is a historically significant example of filmaking which is now known as "cinema direct". The film, which is both disturbing and enlightening, is a poignant and thoroughly human film about people trying their best under difficult circumstances. Salesman is a landmark film which is considered one of the first full length documentary films and a must see for anyone who would like to see where the documentary style came from.
