Season 1: Spring and summer 1940: World War II has just begun and England looks all but doomed in the face of an inevitable German invasion. Still, someone has to fight crime on the home front and who better than Christopher Foyle? Michael Kitchen (Proof Of Life, Mrs Dalloway, The World Is Not Enough) stars as the charismatic detective in this drama series of mysteries. The quietly enigmatic Foyle would much rather serve his country in the armed forces, but his superiors deem him indispensable for combating the heightening anarchy along England's south coast, where the German army is expected any day. Uncertainty, espionage, bombs and internment are the new facts of life for Foyle and those around him.Yet sometimes they merge with an old one of affluent England - murder.
EPISODE 1 - THE GERMAN WOMAN
Set against the background of the controversial internment of German nationals in British camps. Greta, the Austrian wife of local magistrate Henry Beaumont, is resented by locals for her Germanic heritage as well as for her wealth and beauty. When her decapitated body is found, a swastika painted on a nearby tree, Foyle soon realises that this seemingly peaceful Sussex town harbours any number of potential suspects.
EPISODE 2 - THE WHITE FEATHER
The arrest of a young girl on a sabotage charge brings Foyle into contact with a group of English Nazi sympathisers- "The Friday Club", who have gathered to await the expected German invasion. When shots are fired at their charismatic leader, Charles Spencer seems the most likely target - but it's hotel-owner Peggy Ellis who dies. Foyle investigates the murder and uncovers a plot to smuggle a vitally important letter to the enemy. Charles Dance plays Charles Spencer.
EPISODE 3 - A LESSON IN MURDER
Beale, a conscientious objector, dies in police custody setting in train a series of deaths, which Foyle must solve. The judge who jailed Beale receives death threats and then a young evacuee is killed in what looks like an attempt on the judge's life. A secret factory nearby and clues in a child's notebook complicate matters for the detective and his team. Then, when Foyle has pieced together the truth, the entry of Italy into the war engulfs a close friend in tragedy.
EPISODE 4 - EAGLE DAY
An air-raid on Hastings uncovers the body of a murdered man and Foyle sets to work, uncovering a plot to steal art treasures being moved from the local museum to a safe area in Wales. His son Andrew, meanwhile, qualifies as a pilot and flies his first mission but is accused of passing top secret.
Season 2: As World War II rages over Europe, Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle fights his own battle against murder, mystery and betrayal on the south coast of England. Although the beautiful countryside seems far from the glory of the front, Foyle's battle is an ordinary struggle against everyday evil in extraordinarily dangerous times. Set against the background of real events, the second series sees Foyle and his team investigating a looting racket which ends in murder, an illicit trade in fuel, a shooting during Home Guard manoeuvres, and a secret wartime hideaway. Foyle's loyalties are put to the test as his inquiries uncover unpleasant truths that powerful people would rather keep hidden.
EPISODE 5: FIFTY SHIPS: Foyle's determined investigation of a body on a deserted beach puts at risk the donation of American Aid and the crucial start of Lend-Lease in the war.
EPISODE 6: AMONG THE FEW: Pilots and their girlfriends live fast and die young in a story of greed and passion where Foyle finds appearances are deceptive.
EPISODE 7: WAR GAMES: Divided loyalties lead to revenge and murder when a businessman puts profits before principles in a secret pact with the Nazis.
EPISODE 8: THE FUNK HOLE: Foyle finds himself accused of a serious offence, which makes his hunt for a ruthless murderer at a sinister hotel even more difficult.
Season 3: Touted as the new Inspector Morse, this ITV detective show stars Michael Kitchen as a police inspector frustrated at being stuck at home investigating provincial crimes during the second world war.
Honeysuckle Weeks is an inspired choice as Foyle's sidekick, a clergyman's daughter posted from the Women's Royal Army Corps to serve as his driver, and she plays the part with an admirable period style. Foyle's War opens in southern England in the year 1940 - which may seem a strangely remote period in which to place a new detective, but the setting turns out to be a means of adding moral and dramatic depth to the storylines.
