Great Buy

ziggy on 31.12.2010

Had a Topfield 7200 and had problems, but swapped to Teac 849 and it is preforming very well. Would reccomend a look as a good stb

Cheap as

Ray on 07.07.2011

Don't buy it unless you just want a STB, not a recorder. The EPG is the most annoying thing ever. The repeat recording function doesn't work (it just records the first time, not the repeats). Sometimes, when you're fast-forwarding through a recording, it won't start playing again, so you have to stop and start FFing from the beginning again. Doesn't seem to have any function to edit recordings (delete any extra bits to create space)

Simplicity

Herc on 23.08.2011

I bought this little unit to replace the crappy dgtec8040. So far it has met my expectations as a set top box. It was easy to set up and working in no time at all. I have not tried the recording function as yet as I already have a recorder set up on our main tv.

cheap, pay for what you get

Joe on 19.01.2012

Cheap set top unit, has one major flaw, the date does not match the day, ie Wednesday 18th January reads Thursday 18th January, and other issue is once location set, after powering back on always resets to default location, Victoria.

Full HD and great recording feature

Keith on 28.01.2012

I thought the TEAC HDB840 that I've had for years gave a great picture, and it does, but it's chunky compared to the full, crisp HD picture the 849 gives on a ten-year old Viewsonic 1360x768 screen. The tuning function is excellent, but seems to be more sensitive to interference, e.g. from my fridge than other STB. Recording is marvellous, but you must set the timespan yourself and not trust the EPG. And a surprise extra! Last night we watched a different channel to the one it was recording. PROS: Does all it says it does, and more! CONS: EPG recording unreliable. Use the blue Timer button on the remote instead - which, btw, is not explained or referred to AT ALL in the user guide! Not easy to view the list of programs to be recorded. Small bikkies, compared to what it delivers.
