Originally released in 1999, 69 Love Songs has received unprecedented acclaim all over the world. It has received rapturous reviews worldwide in Spin, Rolling Stone and The New York Times hail the triple CD as a work of "genius". 69 Love Songs is the work of New York City based songwriter-producer-musician Stephin Merritt, whose previous songs have attracted the attention of Lou Reed, Brian Wilson and Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys. Dubbed "the Cole Porter of his generation", the introspective Merritt also possesses one of the most distinctive voices in modern American music - a bleak, sonorous croon which is reminiscent of Johnny Cash, Joy Division's Ian Curtis and Scott Walker. The compositions on 69 Love Songs are some of Merritt's most ambitious and diverse to date, incorporating Spector-esque pop, folk, synthesizer ballads, imaginary Broadway showtunes, R&B and country. Merritt is a prolific songwriter who has turned the absurd idea of writing and recording a 69-track triple album on the theme of love into a reality.
