The release of a new DIRTY THREE album is always an event for any Australian music fan, and Album #7 – aka ‘Cinder’ – is no different.
What is different however, is the record itself. The songs are short and very dynamic. For the first time in its history, the band has employed vocalists. And not since the award-winning ‘Horse Stories’ has the Dirty Three sounded so impassioned.
Guest vocals come courtesy of CHAN MARSHALL aka CAT POWER, and SALLY TIMMS (from THE MEKONS), who both added vocals whilst passing through town on tour.

‘Cinder’ was conceived on Phillip Island, in the summer of 2005. It was recorded by CASEY RICE (TORTOISE, GASTR DEL SOL) and features the richest tapestry behind a Dirty Three album yet, with a wide array of musical colour applied.

Says WARREN ELLIS of the new album and next chapter in Dirty Three’s story: “Each of our albums is conceived in a different way, and this was no exception. After two weeks of rehearsals and a gathering of ideas it was apparent we had a lot of material. In January we booked ten days in Sing Sing studios in Richmond, Melbourne with Casey Rice at the helm, and recorded all the tracks. Our approach this time was to load the car up with as many instruments as possible and then give each song what it needed. In the past, we have tried to capture the band’s live potential but this time we thought about how we might perform the songs later. The songs are much shorter, trimmed down, classic in composition. The album boasts violin, drums, guitar, bass, viola, mandolin, bouzouki, organ, piano, acoustic guitar, bagpipes and, for the first time on a Dirty Three album, voice. Each album into it feels like a page closed. This album felt good to make. It sounds like a step somewhere to me, in some direction, and that's what we have always been about."
