Mixed by Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Smashing Pumpkins) CODES AND KEYS saw the bands guitarist/keyboardist, Chris Walla take a step back from his usual role of solely mixing/producing the bands recordings to produce an exciting collaborative record showcasing not only the bands signature sound but one that is being dubbed as sonically innovative by renowned music journalists worldwide. Recorded in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, CODES AND KEYS sees the bands emotional spectrum transition from their familiar charm of entrancing dark, ballads ('Cath' and 'I Will Follow You Into The Dark') to a more diverse, almost celebratory exploration toying with the recurring themes that centre around the albums' title.CODES AND KEYS boasts a fierce evolution within the band, which is no surprise given the changes each member has experienced since the release of 2008's NARROW STAIRS; (Rolling Stone called the album a dark, strangely compelling record that trades the group's bright melancholy for something nearer to despair.) Ben Gibbard and bassist Nick Harmer got married (Gibbard to actress Zooey Deschanel); drummer Jason McGerr had a baby; and guitarist Chris Walla relocated from Portland to Seattle.

This album was exceptionally well-received on its 1994 release, but seems to have improved with age. These tracks have matured into true Cave classics. There's a devil waiting outside your door, Cave croons with Gothic gloom on Loverman, as the Bad Seeds set the mood with their backing vocals - always one of the defining features of Cave's sound.
