In their short lifetime, the seminal Young Marble Giants - Alison Statton and brothers Stuart and Phil Moxham - released a handful of singles and one album. That album, 1980's acclaimed 'Colossal Youth', is one of the most definitive records of the post-punk era; becalmed, resigned and a little tense, it created a new vocabulary for song. Colossal Youth quickly became the independent scene equivalent of a blockbuster smash and one of Rough Trade Records best-sellers. Clearly the punters were partly responding to the sheer quality and aesthetic integrity of the record, but they were also transfixed by the originality and unusualness of the sound - Young Marble Giants made the abstract immediate and the introspective warm and natural. There was nothing else like them around at the time. Since then, the sound of 'Colossal Youth' has seeped into the vocabulary of personal music. Their influence filters through every generation from Nirvana to Belle & Sebastian and 'Colossal Youth's attention to sparse detail is now a modus operandi for haunted electronica auteurs and spectral singer-songwriters alike. But ultimately, only the Young Marble Giants sound like Young Marble Giants! This incredible reissue of 'Colossal Youth' and the Collected Works of Young Marble Giants draws together the band's album and singles for the first time ever, remastered on double CD.
