The task of following up their seminal debut album was daunting, but the Jesus And Mary Chain accomplished it with style on sophomore collection Darklands. A more subtle and understated album, it nevertheless contains their biggest chart hit in "April Skies" and several of the Reid brothers' most loved songs. Premiering a more expansive and nuanced sound, Jim and William wrote, produced and played everything on here.
This deluxe expanded edition features all the non-album b-sides, the pre-Darklands Some Candy Talking EP, outtakes, the complete BBC Radio Sessions the band recorded in this period, previously unreleased material includes a much sought-after Janice Long session from 1986, an alternate version of the "Some Candy Talking" single recorded for the NME, a recently unearthed version of the track "Darklands" with strings, and a BBC audio interview with Jim and William Reid from 1987.
The DVD features the promo videos for all the singles, a first time on DVD for the band-made film for b-side "Kill Surf City", and previously unreleased archival TV appearances, including their only appearance on Top Of The Pops, alongside performances on Belgian TV and ITV's short-lived TOTP rival The Roxy.
The 32 page booklet contains exclusive new interviews that tell the band's story in their own words including a contribution from ex-member and Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie, alongside lyrics, rare memorabilia and previously unpublished photos.
