SONIC YOUTH's status as one of the most innovative and influential bands of the past 30 years needs little introduction or explanation. The venture began way back in 1980, with the band eventually signing to GEFFEN RECORDS in 1990. Having fulfilled their contractual obligations to the label, the group now join forces with the independent beast that is MATADOR. With PAVEMENT's Mark Ibold joining the band on bass, and producer John Agnello back at the controls, the twelve tracks on 'The Eternal' are a fireworks display of Sonic Youth touchstones. The album will have you recalling aspects of the quintessential holy trinity of SY releases; from the primal no-wave attack of their earliest days, to the radical chording and song structures of the 90s period, to the more focused and contemporary explorations of the last five years. The cover art is a painting by the late, great American folk artist John Fahey.
