Now released for the very first time in full on CD, this deluxe edition of 'The Freed Man' comes with a massive 52 tracks (originally 31 tracks) of contemporaneous songs, noise and abstraction.
After his split from J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr in 1989, bassist Lou Barlow's attention turned back to his home-recording side-project with Eric Gaffney. The first album proper for Sebadoh, 'The Freed Man' went on to become one of the most crucial releases in the burgeoning lo-fi indie rock movement, which would eventuate in the success of Beck, Guided By Voices and Sebadoh themselves. Sebadoh, in this incarnation, are a cherishably intimate experience. The 70-odd minutes of wayward, crazy-paved brilliance collected here offers listeners the rare and recommended opportunity to transport themselves to the weed-hazed bedroom where these scraps and songs and pranks were recorded and imbibe the haywire creativity of these sessions. Radically inventive with brilliant songwriting, raw warmth and a playful, restless sensibility, 'The Freed Man' resonated with music lovers everywhere, disillusioned with the soulless over-produced rock of the time.
