"Jodie Foster, John the Baptist, not a waitress left in sight": I always remember that line from Red Red Meat's "Jimmywine Majestic" album (the best record the Stones never had the guts to make!) because it's so stupid but it's sung like it's the meaning of life itself. Tim Rutili seems to play his guitar the same way as he sings - simple notes and chords ripped straight from the heart of the blues, but put back together all over the place (kind of like Yoda playing the guitar!). Red Red Meat are of course no more, but they live on as Califone - and album no 5 is a real beauty! While R.R.M. were like taking a long drawn out breath and then letting it all out quickly and LOUDLY, Califone seem to be all about the inhaling - veiled threats but no follow through. On this album the title track is what it's all about - a 15 minute space jam that should never end. "Sawtooth Sung A Cheater's Song" is pure voodoo evil. "Lion and Bee" is a throwback to one of those beautiful R.R.M. ballads. "Apple" is a song sinking in quicksand. "Two Sisters Drunk On Each Other" is almost jazz funk (don't be scared) but dirty as all hell. Remember - it's all about THAT guitar sound: which is lucky because lines like 'a painted fake old medicine seven lean kine' don't exactly scream "listen to me!"
