HARLEM don't sound like The Replacements, but they sure generate the same ragged thrills. To date the Austin, Texas based three-piece has generated a mountain of attention, laying waste to shoebox sized venues and self-issuing their debut album Free Drugs. Hippies (the band's first meisterwerk for Matador) is filled with Harlem's casual virtuosity and otherworldly songwriting skills, harnessing their energy into 16 blasts of pure pop mania. There's a new dimension of song-writing that is as tightly masterful as it is true to a joyfully frantic primitivism. Recorded with the assistance of Mike McHugh, (Black Lips, Strange Boys), Hippies captures a classic iconoclastic sound that in eras-past was achieved by Dead Moon, The Kinks and The Pixies.
