With their second full-length album, Hootenanny, released in April of 1983, The Replacements made a significant departure from the punk-rock sound displayed on the band’s first two releases. While still filled with the energy and attitude that defined them (as proven by “Run It,” a song about running red lights) the album also showcases Paul’s developing songwriting skills and the band members’ growing abilities as musicians. Songs like “Color Me Impressed” and “Within Your Reach” contain a more fully developed sense of melody than previous efforts and a willingness to experiment musically. Combining pop elements with classic rock and blues, Hootenanny, is in many ways the first true Replacements album.
