Never content to rest on their laurels, Canberra sludge merchants I Exist spent the first half of March recording the follow-up to last year's I: A Turn for the Worse. The new LP, II: The Broken Passage, will be out through Resist Records on June 17 - barely a year after their debut. To cut the long-player, the now seven-piece returned to Melbourne's Goatsound Studios, this time with Billy Anderson helming the desk. I Exist are brimming with excitement at the prospect of working with the US producer, whose production credits include Sleep's Sleep's Holy Mountain and Eyehategod's Dopesick: both hugely influential records for the band. Anderson's CV also includes albums for groups as diverse as the Melvins, Jawbreaker, High on Fire, Sick of it All and Acid King.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | II The Broken Passage Dane Kingsley on 16.06.2011 This album is a real leap forward only one year after the previous record A Turn For The Worse. At first the bottom heavy Billy Anderson production seemed a little flatter compared to most modern hardcore/metal productions, but the more I listen to this the more it stands itself out from the crowd of cookie cutter breakdown bands with mesa boogies and no riffs. This album has riffs in abundance and they've definately progressed since the last one. The whole album feels epic and there's some nice diversity to further stand these guys out from the rest of the pack who take their lead from the respective genere's cliches. This is inspired stuff and should appead to older fans as well as young hardcore and metal listeners who want something a little less obvious. I'm blown away at the song writing on this one. |
