Here is the mystery of Seattle's Cav e Singers: They never listened to much folk music, they never intended to play folk music and more importantly, their guitarist never picked up the instrument until recently. Yet, this strange trio is writing and performing some of the most hypnotising folk music we have today. 'Invitation Songs' sounds like an updated version of the Anthology of American Folk Music. This is folk music approached by way of punk rock. It's sparse, melodic, creepy and alluring. There are dense atmospherics, shuffling stomps, harmonicas, washboards, chaingang musings, yelps and even the odd wavering synth.

Pluto's first recognized entry into the music scene came in 2009 when he won the Tropfest Mu-sic Competition 'Tropscore'. The EP was produced by Pluto Jonze and Tony Espie (The Avalanches, Cut Copy, The Holidays, Midnight Juggernauts). | New Junk Aesthetic (Deluxe Ed Cd/dvd) $24.99 (AUD) While there's no exact science to the resulting madness that is ETID's signature blend of turned-to-eleven hardcore mixed with southern-fried metal, over the last decade the band has consistently produced fan-favorite releases from albums Big Dirty to Hot Damn!, with New Junk Aesthetic as icing on the proverbial metallic cake. |
