Scout Niblett has one of those voices that makes her sound completely unhinged even before you listen to the words - similar to Bjork at her least annoying, or a subdued Chan Marshall - similar to a chronically shy pre-pubescent teenager.

Musically, however, it's like a manic depressive refusing to take it's meds. On the odd ocassion you can hear a guitar it's more than likely to be some pseudo-gonzo metal or superfuzzed madness that would make Soundgarden proud as punch.
The guitars, however, aren't the main musical backing - that's reserved for the crazy drumming - drumming so dominant across the whole album it's hard to describe how it's used. The best description I could give is if the album was recorded with an entire band and then practically all of the the 'tracks' were wiped except the drums and vocals (with an occasional blast of crusty guitar).

Now picture a Bjork or Cat Power album that sounds like that. Get the idea of the madness? Many songs start out sounding like unhinged suicide notes and then BANG! someone lets a Nirvana covers band into the studio and they bash out a minute or two of some ungodly 'jam'. Stop. Handclaps. Stop. Acapella chanting. The Nirvana covers band kicks in again. Then the salvation army kick drum brings it home.
Again and again this happens ("Newburyport" is the perfect example that is actually 4 different songs in one - the middle section of which would sit perfectly on any Fantomas - or Polvo for those of an older age group - album) you think a song is making sense and then it hits a dead end and starts again.

It's this musical chaos that stops Scout Niblett from being "just another depressed girl with an eating disorder" (you know what I mean... pick any example from Joni Mitchell on down) - and an album which is described well elsewhere as "doesn't seem to be changing tempo as much as changing identity".
It's hard to say whether it all works well together, but it's nothing if not captivating.
