Much like Leonard Cohen in his heydey, Devendra Banhart's 'music' consists of that spidery guitar pickin and not much more - after drums, bass, piano or ANY other instrument? Best look elsewhere... Unlike Leonard Cohen, however, his voice doesn't sound like that of a messed-up dirty old man: more like what he actually is - a fried hippy 40 years out of time. Never in a hurry to do anything, these 2-3 minute songs consist of one or two simple verses (like a nursery rhyme, or more to the point early delta blues) and a fade out chorus occasionally. If you own "Rejoicing in the Hands" you'll need this - recorded at the same time and basically a part 2. For the postmodern kids out there, the closest musical comparison I can dredge up is what the John Frusciante debut album sounds like - and considering that when Frusciante put that together he was living on the streets and so hooked on heroin his teeth started falling out I think you get a rough idea of what's going on... if he's trying to continue the folk/blues tradition he's doing it so poorly it's nothing short of brilliant!
