NZ circa 1980s: pop songs - or rather, little heard hits - were born in garages and pressed on screenprinted seven inches. A strong music culture beyond the global music industry was thought and lived. Some of these bands made it out to larger acclaim, but most didn't, despite the following decade's international indie heroes (Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth) championing them heavily.
