Two years after the release of the debut Four Tet album, Dialogue, producer/mixologist/computer kid Kieran Hebden returned with his 2001 slice of brilliance Pause. From the opening chatters of typewriter keys that sweeps into the unusual romance of zithers and harps directed by grandfather clock tick-tocks, Pause is a dramatic shift in style, sound and feel to its predecessor and a significant step up for Kieran. More confident and distinctive with a range of sonics (from incidental rustlings and playground field recordings to delicate melodic flourishes) and audacious beat sculpture, Pause is intended a soothing listen and reflects Kieran embracing eccentric British folk music sounds. Not the bucolic atmosphere, however - Pause is directed by its tough, surefooted beats, navigating with dexterity and strength. This is an album that knows where it's going and how to get there.
