Since forming in early 2008 Songs have become one of the most talked about local act to emerge in the Sydney underground alternative music scene. The Sydney based band make echo heavy drone pop that gives modern music the cold shoulder. Squeezing into the gap between pop, minimalism and no wave, the sound of Songs is deceptively simple, friendly and willfully careless. A huge favourite on the Australian & New Zealand live circuit, Songs have shared the stage with the likes of Deerhunter, Stephen Malkmus, Beach House, My Disco, Love ofDiagrams, St Helens, The Ruby Suns, Witch Hats and Adam Green. Songs is an unexpected collection of Sydney professionals and degenerates. Max Doyle, a successful photographer and founder of respected magazine Doingbird fronts the band. Guitarist Jeff Burch is an American born Kiwi who runs a small publishing house. Steve Uren lives on the beach and previously drummed for an infamous post punk band with Jeff. Ela Stiles, the only girl in the band, comes from the threshold of rural Australia. Songs have released three records so far, a self-titled EP and two split 7"s (one with Melbourne based Love of Diagrams and other with one of New Zealand's most underrated Flying Nun band The Bats).
