Born and raised in the backwoods of Madison, Nika Roza Danilova aka Zola Jesus was literally raised by wolves. Trained as an opera singer from a young age, she applied to Julliard at 10, completed high school in 3 years and will graduate from uni with a double major in French and philosophy in the same time. When not at school (ie. on weekends), she plays as Zola Jesus, crafting dark, lo-fi music with sparse industrial rhythms, no-fi drones, and dominated by her ethereal operatic vocals and keyboards. Inspired by high-school favorites like Diamanda Galas, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Lydia Lunch, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Danilova makes cathartic home recordings using keyboards, drum machines, and anything else she can lay claim to. Those who have seen her handful of live shows, or caught any of the acclaimed, sought after, and now mostly out of print releases on Die Stasi or Troubleman Unlimited will already be familiar. For those uninitiated 'The Spoils' is the most fully realised representation of her sound.
