Defying rumours they were on sabitical or had split, revered British post-rock trio Fridge - Adem Ilhan (Adem), Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and Sam Jeffers - return with their eagerly-anticipated first album in six years, The Sun and one as consistently inspired and original as ever. Loaded with warm, fluttering instrumentals with left-field rhythm beds and gorgeous harmonies that will stick in your head for weeks, 'The Sun' is a slice of electro-acoustic magic and a complete recoding of rock DNA. Even though it was written over three years, The Sun has a solid, coherent sound - also amazing given the number of musical bases bounced off over its 11 tracks. 'Clocks' could be Radiohead as interpreted by Slint. 'Eyelids' is as agile and punchy as anything by Battles. And both make total sense next to blissful lullabies like 'Our Place in This' or 'Year and Years and Years and Years' and even an explosive sketch like 'Drums of Life'. In short, don't expect the lengthy bass solos and po-faced counting of bars and beats post-rock normally conjures up; Fridge summon the raw energy, openness and ambition of its earliest moments here and the exuberance and pure simple fun of friends making music in the garage pours out of every beat on the record. A mighty return for the band and one that's sure to impress fans and critics alike.
