Will Oldham generally needs 're-inforcement' when recording albums to stop him from turning in unlistenable introspective dribble, which is why the revolving door of the Palace line-up (his brothers, Slint, etc) had more bite than his 'solo' albums have managed. Getting Matt Sweeney on board to write the music and reign in his madness forces Will to concentrate more on the words he's singing and HOW he's singing them (the ace up his sleeve). Fear not, it (of course) sounds pretty much the same as everything else he's put to tape (which in most people's eyes is varying degrees of miserable whinging bastard). The guitar is very up front and drenched in reverb - like Palace's "Viva Last Blues" or some of Will's soundtrack work (only interesting!) - the hymn-like whisper of songs like "Blood Embrace" (so slow and quite it could be a Smog song) rub shoulders comfortably with the almost psychedelic "My Home Is the Sea". But enough: I'm either preaching to the converted or boring you to tears. Just like Will does!
